This residence had severe cracking throughout the driveway and steps. Evans landscaping provided the new sub-grade and Moraine Materials provided the concrete. We used the “Signature Driveway Mix” on this job which has added fiber  instead of rebar. Since this residence was on a main street with heavy traffic, special attention had to be given to expansion and control joints. This provides protection against the concrete on the street when it expands from pushing on the driveway, preventing it from heaving.

This home owner wanted an updated look, with less/easier maintenance. Stains and “accidents” are often a pain to clean up from carpet. Instead of having the carpet steam cleaned every so often, this home owner decided to go with tile flooring. We used hardy backer board for the tile backer, which is much easier to install instead of concrete board. They selected a tile from Lowes called Continental Beige with a Mocha sanded grout (This darker grout tends to hide dirt and stains better than a lighter grout). We always recommend using a sanded grout, especially in older home because it is stronger and prevents cracking in the gout lines.

This structure in Clifton, OH was near collapse due to age; upon inheriting the property the home owner contacted The Robert Becker Group for a solution. In turn Hughes Construction was contracted to do the installation. Several interesting issues arose on this project, such as dropping a concrete ceiling ten feet without causing further damage to the structure. We initially thought the retaining wall at the rear of the structure was sitting on top of the roof, as it turns out it wasn’t but a new one was put in just the same. Skids were used to cushion the fall of the concrete roof and retaining wall to prevent damage to walls/concrete floor, luckily McCabe Lumber was nice enough to provide us with some older ones they had around their yard. Tires and ply wood could have also been used, but skids were readily available and worked perfectly for this project. Once demolition was complete the framing was installed per the engineering firm’s specifications. Advantage Roofing was contracted separately to install a flat roof. This is where the second problem arose, how do you effectively attach a roof to a retaining wall? The roofing material utilized was a rubber membrane and tar was placed around the perimeter to prevent leakage. McCabe Lumber provided all the building materials for this project and Evans Landscaping providing the new Alan Block training wall. This project was completed in a five day period, since this home was for sale, painting was to be done by the new owners.

New gutters were installed on the entire roof of this project. The home owner selected white 6″ gutters, we always recommend installing bigger gutters than what are required because the additional cost is very minimal, and they function much more efficiently. Marsh Building Products provided the gutters on this project, in order to make them seamless they had to be rolled off of their truck. The most challenging part of this project was the height off the ground, which was nearly thirty feet. Instead of setting up scaffold or using very large ladders they were installed standing on the roof. By doing this we were able to save the building owners money, and time.

The home owners on this project had a plumber and electrician already, but needed someone to finish the drywall and install wood trim. Subsequently Hughes Construction was contracted to fill the voids in this project. Older homes are always difficult to patch drywall in, often times plaster is already in place, this is the reason we use 20, 45, and 90 min durabond so we can apply as many coats as needed in order to achieve the proper look. The home owner painted and installed the tile themselves.

This home owner’s tile ceiling in their basement was falling down so a new drywall ceiling was installed. In the interest of saving money the home owners decided to texture the ceiling because installing a flat finish is much more expensive. One technique for speeding up this process is mixing paint in with drywall mud instead of water in order to achieve the proper color desired, while maintaining the proper texture.

Hughes Construction Company is a licensed street contractor for the City of Cincinnati. In order for a contractor to work in the right of way, in the street or on the sidewalks in front of your house including your driveway, they must be licensed with the city. Through the City of Cincinnati’s Side Walk Safety program, engineers walk prospected areas within the city that they feel need to be replaced. Some of you may have seen these markings by the “white X” that gets placed in the corner the section of concrete they are requiring to be replaced. Unfortunately this is all done at the homeowner’s expense; the city provides the estimate for the work if you do not hire another contractor such as Hughes Construction Company.

Pressure washing of a stained deck can make a large impact for very little cost. This home owner put their house up for sale and the realtor suggested having the deck re-done in order to make it look more presentable. This job only took a few hours and made a huge impact on the presentation of the home. It is very important to hire a professional when pressure washing a deck because often times more harm than good can be caused by using the wrong nozzle or applying too much pressure.  Hiring Hughes Construction is affordable when you realize how much damage a “do it yourselfer” can potentially cause to the appearance of the deck. From the home owner:

“Hughes Construction was on time and very helpful. Always in contact to make sure everything is on time and satisfactory”- Angie’s List Report

Hughes Construction Company is a licensed contractor with the City of Cincinnati. The city regulations require any person working on a third parties private property to be licensed with the city. Many of you may have heard horror stories about contractors not performing to their full expectations; this is the cities attempt at preventing that from happening. Hughes Construction Company was required to show appropriate insurance, workers compensation, and post a ten thousand dollar bond. Make sure you are hiring individuals that are licensed with the city in order to prevent you and your contractor from being fined. One easy way to check if a contractor is licensed is by going to the City’s Web Site and looking, or asking them to get a permit for the work taking place; a contactor cannot obtain a permit without being appropriately licensed. These requirements are only within city limits, so they do not extend to the suburbs, but you could still rest easy knowing that insurance and worker compensation requirements have been met.

This home owner had severe settlement on the front foundation wall and underneath their garage. The home owner visual noticed large cracks developing in the brick around windows, in turn Hughes Construction Company was contacted to inspect the foundation settlement. Mike Montgomery was contracted to design the structural repair, and Hughes Construction Company was contracted to install the repair. Three Counter forts needed to be installed against the leaning foundation wall, and three underpinning piers underneath the settling garage. This project was started in the winter which is not the ideal time to start a project of this nature, but to prevent further damage to the home Hughes Construction Company elected to start anyway. Once the leaning foundation wall was leveled and all the forms were installed the first concrete pour could take place. All Rite Ready Mix provided the concrete for this project, it is important to notify them of your methods so they can recommend the proper mix for the cold temperatures this time of year. After a three day waiting period the underpinning piers can be used as a stable base to jack the garage foundation level. Once all concrete has been placed a new footer drain can be installed and walls can be sealed. Coincidently the original builder did not install a footer drain on this property, which most likely the reason why some the problems occurred in the first place. Proper drainage gravel was installed in order to allow water to flow into the footer drain and the excavated area was compacted and backfilled. A new concrete porch (set on top of the tallest counter fort) and walkway were installed shortly after backfilling. On the interior of this property steel angles were installed around the perimeter of the basement as additional support, and any exposed cracks were injected with structural epoxy by A-1 Epoxy. Bruce Ryan’s Masonry Construction was contracted separately to repair the brick once Hughes Construction Company had completed their work. While the brick wall was down the home owner decided to replace the front windows which were provided by Marsh Building Products.
